Jobs are a necessary part of life. Without jobs people would still live the barebone existence as farmers, cavemen and women. Jobs provide meaning to one’s life. No matter what one’s calling in life, a good job is a necessity.
A job, vocation, occupation or even day job, is the central aspect of society. More specifically, a day job is any activity, most often routine and frequently performed for payment, that is undertaken outside the working hours of the main employer. Many individuals have multiple jobs. An individual can start a day job by being an employee, voluntarily quitting to pursue a more specific goal, becoming a volunteer, starting a business or even being a parent.
For this reason the jobs-to-be-done theory has become a major preoccupation of many academics, sociologists and psychologists. The theory suggests that people are optimally employed when they have the freedom to explore and apply their human potential in a variety of stimulating environments. In other words, one’s main drive in life should be to seek employment that allows one to experiment and develop the fullest potential. Job satisfaction is closely linked to overall levels of personal happiness.
The advent of technology and global markets has presented with many challenges for employment. However, as employment is affected by external factors such as economy and politics, there are also internal factors like social norms and psychology that affect the choice of jobs. One emerging model of job done the right way is the so-called Theory of Vocation, which suggests that individuals can be maximized when they have a varied range of jobs. The Jobs-to-be-done theory is gaining a lot of attention these days, and is even the subject of separate research projects.
These projects include an examination of vocation as it pertains to part-time workers, students and mothers who earn money from part-time jobs. The literature review indicates that there are many attractive jobs that do not require a particular skill, but simply involve taking action in socially desirable ways. It is important to recognize the distinction between doing something in order to earn money and acting in a socially desirable way in order to meet an important need. Examples include care work, which are seen as a social service that can help people in need; cleaning and maintenance work, which are seen as a skill that can be learned rather than a skill that cannot be learned; and other jobs such as teaching or researching that involve taking socially valuable action in one’s own free time.
In recent years, more people have opted for a career as a part-time worker because it fulfills the need to fulfill career goals without interfering with family life and other activities. Many people also choose part-time work because it allows them time to pursue their passions without having to give up working a full-time job. As well as being a suitable option for a change of pace, part-time jobs provide opportunities for career development. The most common reasons why people take up part-time work are that they wish to supplement their income, or to complete a degree, or to make some repairs after becoming separated from their partner. By choosing to take on part-time work, they are showing flexibility, are not committed to a long-term career and are able to move at their own pace within their employment agreement. By carefully considering the pros and cons of each career option, potential employees can develop a better understanding of what the typical day job is like and what they could do if they chose this particular career path.
